Join our crew
Provide enhanced pre-hospital care to some of the sickest patient in the North West.
Joining our crew is special; it's a role unlike any other.
The unexpected becomes normal when treating high-intensity trauma patients daily. Our crew rely on training, quick thinking, and years of experience.
Our critical care paramedics are on permanent secondment from the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).
And our consultant-level doctors don't just work on the aircraft; they continue to work in the NHS and the major trauma centres in our region.
Our pilots and engineers are also external staff, employed through our strategic partner, Babcock International.
Clinical crew
Our Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) crew bring hospital-level interventions to the patient. On board our aircraft and cars are critical care paramedics and doctors. A team of 48 in total.
All paramedics, other than bank staff, receive advanced training enabling them to support the pilot with navigation and deliver enhanced interventions.
Our doctors are all consultant-level and are trained to the highest standards.
Our crew can provide interventions usually only available in a hospital. From blood transfusions, rapid sequence induction, and surgical procedures, they can offer patients the best chance of survival.
How to join
Recruitment for both our critical care paramedic and doctor positions, when available, will be advertised externally.
North West Ambulance Service will advertise paramedics' roles, while doctors' roles will be advertised through the NHS.
North West Air Ambulance Charity will be part of the recruitment process for both roles.
Aviation crew
Our strategic partners at Babcock International, who provide our helicopters, also employ our pilots and engineers.
We have seven dedicated pilots and three engineers at our airbases in Barton and Blackpool.
All our pilots are highly skilled and have a wealth of knowledge. Many have previously flown in the Armed Forces as well as in civilian aircraft and have amassed a high number of flight hours.
How to join
Recruitment for both our pilot and engineer positions, when available, will be advertised and carried out by Babcock International.
North West Air Ambulance Charity does not directly recruit for these positions.
About North West Air Ambulance
We're a lifesaving and life-changing charity in the North West of England.
Our crews bring enhanced pre-hospital care and medical interventions to the scene, giving patients the best chance, often where seconds can mean the difference between life and death.
With three helicopters and four critical care cars, we operate day and night, 365 days a year, and serve the largest population in the UK, outside of London, but it costs £18 million annually to keep us in the air and on the road.
And here’s the challenge: we receive no government or NHS funding. Every mission we fly is funded entirely by the generosity of our supporters.
